EX HMAS HOBART

The ex-HMAS Hobart is an improved Charles F. Adams class guided missile destroyer whose primary role was air defence of the Royal Australian Navy fleet utilizing anti-submarine and surface gunnery capabilities. Being built in the U.S.A the ex HMAS Hobart was commissioned in Boston in 1965. And was purchased for US$45,000,000.

On board the ship were 20 Officers and 312 Sailors who lived in fully air conditioned quarters and were provided with recreational activities as expected on modern day ships.

 

The ex HMAS Hobart was equipped with a TARTAR guided missile launcher, two 5"/54 calibre rapid fire fully automatic guns, Anti-submarine torpedoes. This along with the vessels ability reach speeds in excess of 30 knots made it a force to be reckoned with.

* A permit is required to dive the site as it is situated in a marine protected area, Rapid Head Sanctuary Zone.

This dive is a deep dive with a maximum depth of 30 meters and the deck of the Hobart at approximately 15 meters.

 

The ex-HMAS Hobart was scuttled four nautical miles west-north-west of Marina Vincent, Yankalilla Bay. Boats may be launched at Wirrina Cove, approximately 1.5 hours drive from Adelaide.

Timings: Dependent on boat departure.

 

Location: The boat will depart Wirrina Cove boat ramp.

 

What might I see? You will see Blue Devils, flat head, nudibranchs, pufferfish, perch, squid, stingray, wrasse and many more.
